EWTN Global Catholic Radio Network
EWTN Global Catholic Radio Network Celebrates 20 Years By Launching its 180th Affiliate
Irondale, AL – EWTN Global Catholic Radio Network, whose potential audience in the U.S. alone now tops 130 million people, will celebrate its 20th year in broadcasting by bringing aboard its 180th affiliate.
“And what an affiliate it is!” said EWTN Radio General Manager David Vacheresse. “We would like to express our gratitude to Immaculate Heart Radio as it launches its 26th station, KCEO 1000 AM, on March 7 in San Diego, California. In addition to this new station, IHR currently broadcasts EWTN radio programming throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah, making them our largest affiliate group.”
IHR President Doug Sherman said this launch is particularly big because San Diego is the 17th largest radio market in the United States.
“It almost goes without saying, but should be repeated often: We are all greatly indebted to Mother Angelica and EWTN,” Sherman said. “We wouldn’t have any of the progress in Catholic radio, if it weren’tfor her faith and determination – and EWTN’s great work!”
EWTN’s 180 radio affiliates are spread across 38 of the 50 U.S. states, and in 19 of the top 35 U.S. radio markets, including San Francisco, Dallas-Ft. Worth, the District of Columbia, Boston, Detroit, Seattle, and now San Diego. EWTN also reaches millions more souls via its worldwide shortwave transmissions, as well as through Radio Católica Mundial, a separate radio network which broadcasts 24-hours-a day in Spanish.
EWTN Global Catholic Network, in its 30th year, is available in over 200 million television households in more than 140 countries and territories. With its direct broadcast satellite television and radio services, AM & FM radio networks, worldwide short-wave radio station, Internet website www.ewtn.com, electronic and print news services, and publishing arm, EWTN is the largest Catholic media network in the world.
National Catholic Register: Update 2/29/12
The National Catholic Register,
America’s Premier Catholic News Source,
Appoints Jeanette De Melo as Editor In Chief
Irondale, AL – Michael P. Warsaw, president and CEO of EWTN, and publisher of the National Catholic Register, announced the appointment of Jeanette De Melo as the Editor In Chief of the National Catholic Register (NCRegister.com).
De Melo previously served as the Archdiocese of Denver’s communications director, spokeswoman and general manager of the Denver Catholic Register, El Pueblo Católico, and the archdiocesan website. Prior to this position, she was the associate communications director for the Archdiocese of New Orleans, where in addition to managing media relations, she co-produced a weekly archdiocesan television program.
As Editor in Chief, De Melo will continue to integrate the Register’s print product with the Web presence and thus aim to strengthen the Register’s mission of offering timely coverage and analysis of news at the intersection of faith and culture. Plans also include enhancing the visual representation and editorial direction of Register products.
“Jeanette’s background in Church communications and media relations will provide a unique perspective to the Register,” said Michael P. Warsaw, EWTN’s president and chief executive officer, and publisher of the National Catholic Register, acquired by EWTN in 2011.
“We currently have a great team in place with the Register and Jeanette will further strengthen our capabilities to offer our readers the most complete coverage of any Catholic newspaper,” said Warsaw.
Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, Archbishop of Philadelphia and EWTN board member, said, “Jeanette combines a deep love for the Church with outstanding professional skills, proven experience and a great grasp of the National Catholic Register's legacy. There's no one better suited to handle this vital kind of leadership.”
Of her appointment to the Register, De Melo commented, “The Register has a legacy of excellent journalism. I’m honored and challenged by the opportunity to join the team and continue that legacy.”
The Register has its origin in Denver, Colo., in the 1920s.
“There is an interesting twist in my joining the Register staff, after close to seven years with the Denver Archdiocese and the Denver Catholic Register. There is a back-to-the-future feeling because the National Catholic Register was born out of the Denver Catholic Register more than 90 years ago. I’m grateful for this little connection but even more grateful for all of the editors, reporters, columnists and sources from all over the country and world who make the Register what it is — the newspaper of record for the Catholic Church in America!”
DeMelo holds a bachelor’s degree in humanities and Catholic culture from Franciscan University of Steubenville in Steubenville, Ohio, and a licentiate degree in Church communications from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome, Italy. She is a member of the Catholic Press Association (CPA) and was recently invited to join the CPA education committee. She is a founding board member of ENDOW, a national Catholic women’s educational organization.

EWTN CEO Challenges Unjust HHS Mandate
EWTN CEO Challenges Unjust HHS Mandate In New York Times Op-Ed
Irondale, AL – In a Feb. 21 New York Times opinion piece, Michael P. Warsaw, President & CEO of EWTN Global Catholic Network, explains why EWTN objects to the Obama Administration’s recent mandate, which requires most employers to offer contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs in their health plans.
“The administration’s supporters say that by opposing the rule, religious employers like EWTN are guilty of trying to coerce our employees and impose our values on them. But we are simply choosing not to participate in the use of these drugs. It is the government – which does not accept EWTN’s religious choice and can punish that choice by imposing fines – that is coercing us. But under the Constitution and federal religious liberties law, we cannot be forced to give up our beliefs as the price of participation in the public square.”
He also explains that that while religious liberty is the most important Constitutional right being trampled upon by the mandate, it is not the only thing at risk.
“The mandate also threatens the financial viability of any organization — religious or secular, charitable or for-profit — that disagrees with the administration’s politics,” Warsaw writes. “They could be forced to stop offering health insurance and be saddled with fines, which are immense competitive disadvantages. They’ll have to take money away from their core missions to pay fines. They’ll lose employees who can’t afford to work for employers who offer no health insurance. They’ll lose donors who are scared off by the penalties.
“The end result: organizations that agree with the administration or are willing to compromise their beliefs will thrive. Organizations that don’t will shrink or die.”
And, he says, it isn’t just religious employers like EWTN who will suffer.
“Small businesses owned by men and women of faith, which have been given no protection whatsoever in the administration’s accommodation, will also take a hit.”

EWTN Sues U.S. Government
EWTN Sues U.S. Government
To Stop Contraception Mandate
Network Asks Court to Stop Order to Pay for Immoral Services
Irondale, AL – EWTN Global Catholic Network filed a lawsuit February 9 in U.S. District Court in Birmingham, Alabama against the Department of Health & Human Services, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and other government agencies seeking to stop the imposition of the contraception mandate as well as asking the court for a declaratory judgment that the mandate is unconstitutional. EWTN is the first Catholic organization to file suit since the final HHS rules were published by the Obama administration on January 20, 2012.
“We had no other option but to take this to the courts,” says EWTN President and CEO Michael P. Warsaw. “Under the HHS mandate, EWTN is being forced by the government to make a choice: either we provide employees coverage for contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs and violate our conscience or offer our employees and their families no health insurance coverage at all. Neither of those choices is acceptable.”
The lawsuit was filed on EWTN’s behalf by Mark Rienzi, Kyle Duncan, and Erik Kniffin from the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty.
“We are taking this action to defend not only ourselves but also to protect other institutions – Catholic and non-Catholic, religious and secular – from having this mandate imposed upon them,” Warsaw continued. “The government is forcing EWTN, first, to inform its employees about how to get contraception, sterilization and abortifacient drugs, a concept known as forced speech. To make the matter worse, the government then will force EWTN to use its donors’ funds to pay for these same morally objectionable procedures or to pay for the huge fines it will levy against us if we fail to provide health care insurance. There is no question that this mandate violates our First Amendment rights. This is a moment when EWTN, as a Catholic organization, has to step up and say that enough is enough. Our hope is that our lawsuit does just that.”
The Becket Fund previously filed similar lawsuits on behalf of Belmont Abbey College, a small Catholic liberal arts college in Belmont, N.C., and Colorado Christian University, an interdenominational Christian liberal arts university near Denver, which demonstrates that this is not just a Catholic issue. Both suits were filed prior to the HHS rules being finalized in January.
“When the government recently mandated that all private group health plans cover certain abortion drugs (namely, Plan B and ella), as well as related education and counseling, [our clients] knew that they could not obey both the government’s mandate and their own religious convictions,” said Rienzi, who focuses his practice at the Becket Fund on violations of the Fourteenth Amendment, free speech, and the free exercise of religion. “The mandate has been sharply criticized from across the political spectrum, and from religious leaders of a variety of faiths.”
Duncan, a former Louisiana Solicitor General and General Counsel of the Becket Fund, said that without a change in the rules, EWTN could be forced to pay more than $600,000 for the “privilege” of not underwriting these services.
“This mandate is particularly hard on Catholics because Catholic organizations, such as hospitals, schools, social service agencies, media outlets and others, serve people regardless of their religious beliefs,” Warsaw said. “We serve others not because they are Catholic, but because we are Catholic. “
EWTN Global Catholic Network, in its 30th year, is available in over 200 million television households in more than 140 countries and territories. With its direct broadcast satellite television and radio services, AM & FM radio networks, worldwide short-wave radio station, Internet website www.ewtn.com, electronic and print news services, and publishing arm, EWTN is the largest religious media network in the world.
The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty is a non-profit, public-interest law firm dedicated to protecting the free expression of all religious traditions. The Becket Fund has a 17-year history of defending religious liberty for people of all faiths. Its attorneys are recognized as experts in the field of church-state law, and they recently won a 9-0 victory against the federal government at the U.S. Supreme Court in Hosanna-Tabor v. EEOC.
