 Irondale, AL (EWTN) – Los Angeles Archbishop José H. Gomez, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), announced April 23 that the U.S. bishops will join the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops to renew the consecration of the two nations to the care of our Blessed Mother. EWTN Global Catholic Network will air the brief liturgy and prayer of re-consecration at 3 p.m. ET, Friday, May 1, live from Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles with Archbishop Gomez celebrating. The event will also be aired live on EWTN’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ewtnonline.

On the day of the Re-Consecration, Birmingham Bishop Robert J. Baker will celebrate the 8 a.m. ET Daily Mass and the Franciscan Friars of the Eternal Word will conduct a Rosary Holy Hour at 2 p.m. ET.

In addition, as a lead up in the week of the Re-Consecration, the Friars will lead a series of short meditations on the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady. The meditations will immediately follow the 8 a.m. ET Mass on EWTN and will air in place of a recessional hymn. These meditations will also be aired live on EWTN’s Facebook page, along with a post containing the words to each day’s meditation. In a letter to the U.S. Bishops regarding the Re-Consecration, Archbishop Gomez said: “This will give the Church the occasion to pray for Our Lady’s continued protection of the vulnerable, healing of the unwell, and wisdom for those who work to cure this terrible virus.” Each year, the Church seeks the special intercession of the Mother of God during the month of May. “This year, we seek the assistance of Our Lady all the more earnestly as we face together the effects of the global pandemic.”

“The Fatima children; Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, said three apparitions of the Angel of Peace occurred in 1916 prior to apparitions of Our Lady which took place six times between May 13 and Oct. 13, 1917, at Cova da Iria. During the apparitions of the Angel of Peace, the children said they saw a transparent figure in the form of a young man, whiter than snow and of great beauty. He appeared over the trees and said, ‘Do not be afraid! I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me.’ Then the Angel knelt and prayed, 'My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love You. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love You' three times.”

Tracking Where Catholics Stand Ahead of 2020 Election

Second Poll from EWTN News and RealClear Opinion Research Finds Devout Catholics’ Approval of President Trump has Increased,
Even After Impeachment Trial

WASHINGTON, DC – EWTN News and RealClear Opinion Research have partnered to conduct multiple deep-dive polls on Catholic voters’ attitudes and trends ahead of the 2020 election. This is the second in a series of four opinion research polls being conducted between November 2019 and November 2020 to chart an understanding of where Catholics stand on issues surrounding the Church, politics, and American culture. 

Overall, the new poll finds that President Donald Trump is in a stronger position among devout Catholics, especially devout Latino Catholics, than he was at the end of 2019. Though there are some agreements on social issues between “devout” Catholics and the more general Catholic population, stark political differences appear to exist between these two Catholic communities.

Some key highlights from the poll: 

• 54% of Catholic voters said they are open to voting for Pres. Trump in 2020.
       ○   Including 34% indicating that they will definitely vote for Pres. Trump in 2020.
       ○   He is lifted by the 67% of devout Catholics who are sure to or open to voting for him, 3% points from the December 2019 poll.
• 52% of devout Hispanics said they are sure to vote for Pres. Trump in 2020.
       ○    58% of devout Hispanics think the nation is headed in the right direction.
       ○    58% of devout Hispanics think the country is better off financially than 4 years ago.
       ○   77% of devout Hispanics think they are personally better off financially than 4 years ago.
• A majority of all Catholics (55%) believe that the use of bathrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms should be based on biological sex at birth and not gender identity.
• 57% of all Catholics believe there should be more faith-friendly programming coming out of the entertainment industry.
• By nearly a two-to-one margin (57%-29%), Catholic voters support the death penalty, even while 63% are aware of the Church’s position that it is inadmissible
• Pres. Trump’s overall job approval among all Catholics is at 47%, +3% points from the December 2019 poll, and at 63% among devout Catholics, yet he still trails every major Democrat contender in head-to-head matchups less than a year out from the election.

• Of the Catholics likely to vote in the Democratic primary, 29% would vote for Joe Biden, 24% for Bernie Sanders, 17% for Michael Bloomberg; all other candidates in single digits.

“Our second poll confirms even more starkly what we learned in the first—that the Catholic vote is certainly not a monolith, and one of the most important predictors of a Catholics’ vote is the degree to which they accept Church teachings,” said John Della Volpe, Director of Polling at RealClear Opinion Research. “In turn, this can help us gauge where they fall on both political and social issues, although there were definitely some unexpected results that we plan to explore further in the next poll.”

Devout Catholics, along with Evangelicals, represent one of his most steadfast bases of support. This means they remain vital to his re-election hopes, and he cannot win in 2020 without them.”

METHODOLOGY 

From January 28 to February 4, 2020, RealClear Opinion Research conducted a poll of registered Catholics in the United States. Respondents were contacted online, and the survey was offered in both English and Spanish. The sample size was N=1,521 with a credibility interval of +/-2.77 at the 95% confidence level.

EWTN To Launch African News Agency

Irondale, AL (EWTN) – EWTN Global Catholic Network announced May 10 that it will launch a news service for the African continent.  ACI-Africa will be a Nairobi, Kenya-based Catholic news agency, which will publish content in English, French and Portuguese. EWTN Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael P. Warsaw formally introduced the project during an event at EWTN’s Vatican bureau. The news agency will officially begin operations on August 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption, the same date on which EWTN Founder Mother Angelica launched EWTN in 1981.

“I am pleased to announce that EWTN will soon be launching a news agency which will cover the Church across the continent of Africa,” Warsaw said. “The Church in Africa is vibrant and continues to see exponential growth.  My hope is that this new service from EWTN will help continue to build up the African Church and also ensure that the voice of the African Church is heard more clearly around the world with content that is shared through EWTN’s other news platforms.”

The Association for Catholic Information in Africa (ACI-Africa) will be headed by Father Don Bosco Onyalla, a priest of the Diocese of Rumbek in South Sudan. He is a journalist who established and previously oversaw the Catholic News Agency For Africa (CANAA), a project of the African bishops conference since May 2013. Onyalla’s work has included producing websites, newsletters and social media updates for the bishops, as well as working with diocesan, national and regional episcopal communication directors throughout Africa.  He speaks English, French, and Swahili, as well as the local languages of Luhya and Dinka.

“I look forward to interacting with fellow Catholic journalists under the EWTN umbrella, to facilitating the telling of Africa’s story by Africans, and to the challenges involved in setting up a news agency in the vast and multi-cultural context that is Africa,” Onyalla said.

Irondale, AL (EWTN) – He was so brave during the First World War that he ran countless times into “no man’s land” to drag fellow soldiers to safety. He was so devout that he would arise early to swim and pray in an icy lake, yet he was “such a jovial character” that everyone wanted to hang out with him.

He was Father Willie Doyle, and he was an Irish Catholic Jesuit, who enlisted as a Chaplain in the British Army in 1915 because he wanted to be on the battlefield with soldiers when they most needed a priest. While Father Willie’s early life sets the stage, his story really comes to life after the outbreak of the First World War when the 42-year-old priest joined the British Army, 16th Irish Division, as a Catholic Chaplain.

“All denominations loved him,” said Director/Producer Campbell Miller. “They knew no matter what happened, even if they were out in no man’s land and left for dead, Father Willie would come for them. He didn’t just come once. He came multiple times a day. He would drag that soldier back if injured or, if they weren’t going to make it, he would lie down beside them and give them the last rites.”

Miller said all the soldiers wanted to be in Father Willie’s dugout because it appeared to them that no one who fought near him was killed. However, that changed in August 1917. Father Willie went out on the battlefield to rescue two men, and was caught in a mortar attack.

Says Miller: “Father Willie wanted to give the men that passed away a dignified Christian burial. It feels very odd that this could not be awarded to him because they never actually found his body. He was blown to bits.”

This might seem like a sad ending, but Miller says no one who looks at Father Willie’s life ultimately comes away sad.

“I would have wanted to hang out with Father Willie” he said. “Here was a man who gave up his life for his friends. You see that there was no fear. You see, in his limited time on earth, the respect people had for him and the impact he had on so many people while he was alive -- and even afterward from the pamphlets he wrote. “Shall I Become a Priest?”, one of his pamphlets, brought many to the priesthood. When you see what he accomplished, you can’t help but get inspired.”

Father Willie’s cause for canonization, which was put forward in 1943, has languished. Miller says: “My hope for this film is that it will cause people to again look at his cause for canonization.”

Fr. Stanley Rother, First American-Born Martyr

Irondale, AL (EWTN) – EWTN Global Catholic Network will broadcast the “Beatification of Servant of God Fr. Stanley Rother live from the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, OK at 11 a.m. ET, Saturday, Sept. 23, with an encore at midnight.

The beatification will be co-hosted by Fr. Christopher Brashears from the Diocese of Oklahoma, where Fr. Rother was born, and Fr. Charles Connor, STL, Ph.D. Father Connor not only teaches at Mount St. Mary’s, the Seminary which Fr. Rother attended, but also hosts EWTN’s upcoming documentary, “Fr. Stanley Rother – American Martyr.” To understand why Fr. Father Rother is one of many priests, sisters and lay people from the then Diocese of Oklahoma City and Tulsa who responded to now Pope St. John XXIII’s call for missionaries in South and Central America. While his path to the priesthood wasn’t easy, he made it through Mount St. Mary’s and, after a few parish assignments, Father Rother signed himself up for a mission in southwest Guatemala.

He arrived in Guatemala in 1968, where he was beloved. There, it wasn’t his knowledge of Latin that mattered, but his knowledge of Spanish and the local dialect, which allowed him to say Mass and broadcast radio programs in the local language, and his expertise in farming allowed him to help the locals plow their fields.

Father Rother loved his work, however, during his 13 years at the mission, the political situation became more and more dire. A catechist he knew well was kidnapped, tortured and killed. Priests with whom he worked were assaulted and some were killed.

Father Rother eventually found himself on a death list. He returned home for a bit to visit his family and to pray about whether the Lord wanted him to remain in Guatemala.

Most Rev. Harry J. Flynn, D.D., Former Rector, Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, said Father Rother told him, “If I stay there and speak, I will be deported or killed.” However, after much prayer, Father Rother would tell the Rector: “I know what I must do.”

Father Rother returned to the mission where he was killed in the early morning hours of July 28, 1981 by two shots to the head.

In making his decision to return to Guatemala, Father Rother said: “A Shepherd should be with his people,” and “We are ordained not for ourselves. We are ordained for God’s people and we become the servants of God’s people.”

Facility Located at Historic Walsingham Site

Irondale, AL (EWTN) – EWTN Global Catholic Network has opened its first studio and office in the United Kingdom. The facility is located in a converted home in the historic Village of Walsingham, north of London. The town is the home of one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe, the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, which dates to 1061. The formal dedication took place on Tuesday, August 29 in a ceremony attended by EWTN Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer Michael P. Warsaw; Monsignor John Armitage, Rector of the Shrine; and the Most Reverend Alan Hopes, Bishop of East Anglia.

“This is a particularly important step for the continued development of EWTN in the U.K.,” said Network Chairman and CEO Michael P. Warsaw. “This new facility will allow us to greatly expand our capacity to produce programming for our European channels as well as to more easily incorporate content from the U.K. into our other channels around the world.

“It is also appropriate that this new facility is located just steps from the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, which for centuries has been one of the most important centers of Catholicism in Britain. Every year hundreds of thousands of people come to Walsingham on pilgrimage,” said Warsaw. “I'm very happy that EWTN now has a presence in this extraordinary place and can share what happens here with our audience around the globe.”

The three-story building named "Annunciation House" contains EWTN’s studio and a street-level reception and welcome center that introduces the Network to visitors. The facility allows Shrine pilgrims to enjoy clips from EWTN’s most popular television shows, original films, documentaries and more.

In addition to producing programs with leading Catholics from across the U.K., Warsaw said EWTN hopes to form a strategic collaboration with the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham that will help the Shrine carry out its mission to evangelize.

In a letter of congratulations read at the dedication, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster and President of the Bishops Conference of England and Wales, wrote: “Over the last 950 years Walsingham has been a place of pilgrimage, proclaiming the joy of the Annunciation; in this new chapter of its history, I welcome the opportunity for the Shrine and EWTN to work together as servants of the New Evangelization.” 

Shrine Rector Monsignor John Armitage noted that “Walsingham is very much the crossroads of the Catholic Church in England. The Church needs to be at the crossroads, particularly an organization in communications. So we are delighted as a Shrine to be able to welcome EWTN to come here as an organization in their own right, but at this place where so many pilgrims come from all over the world.”

EWTN transmits dedicated television and radio channels for the U.K. and Ireland. Those services are available on the Sky satellite platform, cable and video streaming platforms throughout the region. The Network also transmits two additional television channels for the European continent.

The project in Walsingham was made possible through the work of Saint Clare Media-EWTN, Ltd., the Network's not-for-profit affiliate in Britain. Kelty will be among the guests interviewed in the special “EWTN Live” which airs at 8 p.m. ET, the night of the premiere. Other special guests will be George J. Phillips, Chairman of the Board of the Father Capodanno Guild (who served with the priest and whose testimony is also in the film); and Mary Preece, Vice-Postulator of Cause of Father Vincent R. Capodanno.

“Not only was Father Capodanno a hero, he was one of those people who had charisma while still being a very humble person,” Kelty said. “People just wanted to be around him -- everyone who knew him told me that.”

“Called and Chosen” is most riveting in the last hour of the 90-minute film, which intersperses the testimonies of those Marines with whom Fr. Capodanno served with realistic battle scenes that put viewers into the heart of the action. We see a Military Chaplain who went into battle – even though it wasn’t required of him – armed only with the weapon of his faith.

Father Capodanno died exactly where he wanted to be, where he knew God willed him to be. As one Marine who served with him said upon seeing Father’s body: “Every other American I had seen killed had a very terrified look on their face. He was at peace.”
