EWTN Political Polling

Tracking Where Catholics Stand Ahead of 2020 Election

Second Poll from EWTN News and RealClear Opinion Research Finds Devout Catholics’ Approval of President Trump has Increased,
Even After Impeachment Trial

WASHINGTON, DC – EWTN News and RealClear Opinion Research have partnered to conduct multiple deep-dive polls on Catholic voters’ attitudes and trends ahead of the 2020 election. This is the second in a series of four opinion research polls being conducted between November 2019 and November 2020 to chart an understanding of where Catholics stand on issues surrounding the Church, politics, and American culture.
Overall, the new poll finds that President Donald Trump is in a stronger position among devout Catholics, especially devout Latino Catholics, than he was at the end of 2019. Though there are some agreements on social issues between “devout” Catholics and the more general Catholic population, stark political differences appear to exist between these two Catholic communities.
Some key highlights from the poll:
  • 54% of Catholic voters said they are open to voting for Pres. Trump in 2020.
         ○   Including 34% indicating that they will definitely vote for Pres. Trump in 2020.
         ○   He is lifted by the 67% of devout Catholics who are sure to or open to voting for him, 3% points from the December 2019 poll.
  • 52% of devout Hispanics said they are sure to vote for Pres. Trump in 2020.
         ○    58% of devout Hispanics think the nation is headed in the right direction.
         ○    58% of devout Hispanics think the country is better off financially than 4 years ago.
         ○   77% of devout Hispanics think they are personally better off financially than 4 years ago.
  • A majority of all Catholics (55%) believe that the use of bathrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms should be based on biological sex at birth and not gender identity.
  • 57% of all Catholics believe there should be more faith-friendly programming coming out of the entertainment industry.
  • By nearly a two-to-one margin (57%-29%), Catholic voters support the death penalty, even while 63% are aware of the Church’s position that it is inadmissible
  • Pres. Trump’s overall job approval among all Catholics is at 47%, +3% points from the December 2019 poll, and at 63% among devout Catholics, yet he still trails every major Democrat contender in head-to-head matchups less than a year out from the election.
  • Of the Catholics likely to vote in the Democratic primary, 29% would vote for Joe Biden, 24% for Bernie Sanders, 17% for Michael Bloomberg; all other candidates in single digits.
“Our second poll confirms even more starkly what we learned in the first—that the Catholic vote is certainly not a monolith, and one of the most important predictors of a Catholics’ vote is the degree to which they accept Church teachings,” said John Della Volpe, Director of Polling at RealClear Opinion Research. “In turn, this can help us gauge where they fall on both political and social issues, although there were definitely some unexpected results that we plan to explore further in the next poll.”
Matthew Bunson, Executive Editor of EWTN News, adds, “In a year in which every vote will likely count, no campaign can ignore Catholics, most so President Trump. Devout Catholics, along with Evangelicals, represent one of his most steadfast bases of support. This means they remain vital to his re-election hopes, and he cannot win in 2020 without them.”
METHODOLOGY
From January 28 to February 4, 2020, RealClear Opinion Research conducted a poll of registered Catholics in the United States. Respondents were contacted online, and the survey was offered in both English and Spanish. The sample size was N=1,521 with a credibility interval of +/-2.77 at the 95% confidence level.

There is a danger in the ignorance of voters

From the Catholic Church in 1910, I give you...

Dangers to a Government by the People

"The safety of the Republic lies in the vigilant and active patriotism of the American people.

There is a danger in the ignorance of voters. As a rule, the man who does not read and write intelligently cannot vote intelligently. Americans understand the necessity of popular instruction, and spare no expense spreading it. They cannot be too zealous in the matter. They need to have laws in every State which will punish, as guilty the crime against the country, the parent who neglects to send his children to school.

There is a danger-and a most serious one- in corrupt morals. A people without good morals is incapable of self-government. At the basis of the proper exercise of the suffrage lie unselfishness and the spirit of sacrifice. A corrupt man is selfish; an appeal to duty finds no response in his conscience; he is incapable of the high-mindedness and generous acts which are the elements of patriotism; he is ready to sell the country for pelf or pleasure. Patriotism takes alarm at the spread of intemperance, lasciviousness, dishonesty, perjury; for country’s sake it should arm against those dire evils all the country’s forces, its legislatures, its courts, and above all else, public opinion. Materialism and the denial of a living, supreme God annihilate conscience, and break down the barriers to sensuality; they sow broadcast the seeds of moral death; they are fatal to liberty and the social order. A people without a belief in God and a future life of the soul will not remain a free people. The age of the democracy must, for its own protection, be an age of religion."

Blow it out your ear Fr. Longenecker

Today I am sounding off on Longenecker's political views because he just called me "loathsome" and basically stupid.
Longenecker: "...I don’t actually loathe Donald Trump I loathe the Trump Cult
This is the growing adulation for the man, and for that reason and the huge rallies disturb me.
I’m disturbed because I am whiffing the signs of demagoguery, and the problem with the demagogue is overweening pride."
Stop right there.

Let's look at what Longenecker is saying about the people who voted for President Trump and the people who attend Trump rallies.
Definition by Vocabulary.com: "Demagoguery is a manipulative approach — often associated with dictators and sleazy politicians — that appeals to the worst nature of people. Demagoguery isn't based on reason, issues, and doing the right thing; it's based on stirring up fear and hatred to control people. For example, a politician who stirs up a fear of immigrants to distract from other issues is using demagoguery. Demagoguery is one of the most negative aspects of politics, but it's also one that's all too common."
The "worst nature of people"?

Apparently, supporting a pro-life, cut regulations, America first, border security and jobs not mobs president is appealing to my "worst nature"?😒

Longenecker continues to make an ass of himself when he says it upsets him when politicians like Trump believe their ideas for fixing the country's problems are right.
Longenecker: "The problem with pride is not arrogance, boasting or showing off. Those are simply the symptoms of pride.
The deeper problem with pride is the assumption that I am right. Not only “I am right” but “I am 100% without a doubt, right” and if I’m 100% without a doubt right, then the other guy must be wrong, and if he’s wrong, he’s the problem, and if he’s the problem, then he has to be blamed, and if he has to be blamed and if he is the problem, then I have to solve the problem, and the way I solve the problem is get rid of the problem. The problem has to go away, and if it won’t go away on its own I will make it go away."

What a dumb-ass thing to say!

Why would anyone support a politician who did NOT believe they had the right ideas for fixing problems?? Does that make sense to anyone besides Longenecker?

He ends his asinine article with...
"If you are an American Christian, don’t fall into the trap and jump on the Trump bandwagon. Vote on Tuesday with your eyes wide open. Vote for the best candidate according to your conscience and according to that person’s personal integrity, his or her policies and what you realistically believe they can accomplish to achieve the common good.
Prefer Donald Trump if you think he will do the best for the country, be grateful for the good decisions he has made…
…but when it comes to the cult of Donald–apply the brakes.
PS: If you are a Trump fan and this post has made you mad…don’t you think that might be a warning sign? Isn’t it a good thing to be wary of politicians and men of power? Isn’t it a wise thing for a priest to step back and warn about the allure of worldly power and advise caution?"

Let this proud "Cult of Trump" woman explain the facts to you- and to the majority who just don't understand WHY thousands of people flock to Trump rallies and support Trump, his policies and his at times outlandish speeches.

For decades, Republicans have been forced to vote for spineless, I'll-promise-you-the-world-do-nothing politicians. We put our hope into one after the other who promised to be strong against the left and fulfill campaign promises. They told us they were pro-life, they lied. They were actors, acting out a role they needed to get the part. Once they were nominated they ignored their base and did whatever the hell they wanted.

They were never truly in touch with voters, they just knew which buttons to push to get our votes and that we couldn't bring ourselves to ever vote for the other side. So we held our noses and voted or we just stayed home and wept. These politicians never cared about us, they only cared about our votes. We were numbers to them, not real people with real hopes, dreams and problems needing solving.

Trump showed up and talked about things NO other politicians were talking about. He was talking about the things Republican VOTERS were talking about around the table with their families and friends. And he didn't beat around the bush or speak politically correct. He spoke like us.

He was willing to fight for the things important to us, the Republican voters. He took down each and every fake actor out there one by one because he truly believes and thinks as we do- his base. He is one of us.

You just don't get that.

Maybe because you only see a millionaire bully who thrives on winning.

We see a political hero. A man who defies the odds and jumps into the battle even when the odds are against him because he believes in the fight. People laughed at him, called him a joke, homophobic, racist, white supremacist, etc. Yet he never wavered. We watched. He took it and fought back. That is what we were waiting for!

Trump is a man willing to take the abuse constantly tossed at him because he believes in what he is doing and he is listening to his base. He's a man with a backbone who will fight for what WE want. A man who never, not even for a moment, forgets who his base is. He is fighting for us, and the things WE believe in at tremendous personal cost to himself. We see his faults and we don't care because he is the only one fighting for us.

He's had his reputation shredded, he's been sued and is being sued over and over again. He has had to not only fight the Democrats, he even has to fight the establishment GOP-the swamp and RINO's. He's just like us! We, the Republican voters have had to fight the establishment ourselves for decades, but we could never win against such power. We were forced to either submit and vote for the GOP candidate we knew was a spineless worm or support a pro-butcher socialist loving Democrat. We had no one speaking for us, fighting for us. Until Trump.

We don't care that he doesn't wear a halo, we didn't vote for him because we wanted a saint in office. We voted for him because we wanted a fighter in office willing to fight for us and our political platform because he sees what we see and he believes what we believe. The Republican Party LEFT the Republican voters years ago. Now Trump is taking it back and Republican voters are cheering to have our Party back from the spineless GOP swamp dwellers. This is what so many 'never-Trumpers' and establishment types just don't get. Trump hasn't destroyed the Republican Party...he's put it back together!

Christian voters did not forget that President Obama was a threat to religious freedom. Bakery shop's and flower shops and wedding photographers went out of business and were sued because they would not go against their religious beliefs and participate in gay "marriages". These people had their livelihoods destroyed and were harassed and smeared in the media for months and years.

And we knew Hillary Clinton promised to be a threat to religious freedom. She would continue the liberal agenda to destroy religion and religious freedom in the United States.

Christian's, Catholics and Protestants alike saw this, we knew this, we feared this and we knew we HAD to find a fighter who was willing to take on this battle for our religious freedom or we'd lose it.

We found him.

Donald Trump promised to support religious freedom.

Others who were running in 2016 were more of the same - spineless- mostly RINO's -not to be trusted. We wanted someone we could trust, someone who believed what we believed.

President Donald Trump is that man and I thank God for him every day. And I believe, truly and honestly, that God had something to do with Trump winning the election.

Trump's kept promises...

-Two conservative pro-life Supreme Court Justices
-Stocking the Federal Courts with conservative judges
-ISIS
-North Korea
-Cut regulations and red tape
-Economy
-Jobs
-Pro-life
-Paris Accord
-NAFTA
-Rebuild Military
-Tax Cuts
-Stock Market
-Trade
-Ended Obamacare mandate
-Opioid crisis
-Immigration

I am THRILLED we have a President who wants to secure our borders, not just from illegal immigrants, but from drugs. I want that wall built, I have wanted that wall built for decades. Now we have a President who will not back down and is going to keep on fighting to build that wall.

Unfortunately we know it won't be as nice and secure as the lovely walls protecting Vatican City and Pope Francis from the unwanted...

...but it will one day sooner rather than later, be a wall that will help keep out illegals and drugs.

So you see Father Longenecker, we voters in the 'Cult of Trump' as you call it, will continue to support Trump and vote for him again in 2020 because he is one of us and he keeps his promises. With all due respect, if you don't like that, you can blow it out your ear.

Vatican takes a swipe at Michael Voris and other Catholics

In a stunning article written in Civiltà Cattolica, shared on Rorate Caeli, the Vatican takes a swipe at Michael Voris and Catholics in the United States for our politics and more. It's written by Fr. Antonio Spadaro SJ and Argentine Presbyterian Pastor Marcelo Figueroa, who are (according to Rorate Caeli) "two of the Pope's own closest confidantes".

I was stunned reading this article. I shouldn't have been, but I was. Here are a few of the things that I have to comment on.

First up, the authors whine that they don't like the sort of "ecumenism" they are seeing between protestant evangelicals and Catholics because these protestants and Catholics are coming together against things like abortion, same-sex marriage, religious education in schools and other moral issues. You heard that right, God forbid protestants and Catholics agree on a moral issue and base their votes on such things!
Quote: "Appealing to the values of fundamentalism, a strange form of surprising ecumenism is developing between Evangelical fundamentalists and Catholic Integralists brought together by the same desire for religious influence in the political sphere. Some who profess themselves to be Catholic express themselves in ways that until recently were unknown in their tradition and using tones much closer to Evangelicals. They are defined as value voters as far as attracting electoral mass support is concerned. There is a well-defined world of ecumenical convergence between sectors that are paradoxically competitors when it comes to confessional belonging. This meeting over shared objectives happens around such themes as abortion, same-sex marriage, religious education in schools and other matters generally considered moral or tied to values. Both Evangelical and Catholic Integralists condemn traditional ecumenism and yet promote an ecumenism of conflict that unites them in the nostalgic dream of a theocratic type of state."
I have to stop the quote here because I question just what the authors mean by "Both Evangelical and Catholic Integralists condemn traditional ecumenism..."

Number one, if this wasn't so sad I'd be laughing my head off!

It's the Church that STOPPED real ecumenism...you know, converting people and bringing them into the Only Church Jesus Christ founded on earth. Now the Church just wants to "dialogue" with people and walk with them where ever it is they are wandering off to these days.

Pope Francis has made it perfectly clear he doesn't want to bring anyone into Christ's Holy Catholic Church, he wants to leave them right where they are, where ever that may be. That my friends is NOT ecumenical!

Number two, "Catholic Integralists"...really? The contempt oozing from the Vatican to authentic Catholics knows no limits.

Let's continue with Civiltà Cattolica's ("the journal considered the official voice of the Vatican") article depiction of American Catholics who still believe the faith...
Quote: "However, the most dangerous prospect for this strange ecumenism is attributable to its xenophobic and Islamophobic vision that wants walls and purifying deportations. The word “ecumenism” transforms into a paradox, into an “ecumenism of hate.” Intolerance is a celestial mark of purism. Reductionism is the exegetical methodology. Ultra-literalism is its hermeneutical key.Clearly there is an enormous difference between these concepts and the ecumenism employed by Pope Francis with various Christian bodies and other religious confessions. His is an ecumenism that moves under the urge of inclusion, peace, encounter and bridges. This presence of opposing ecumenisms – and their contrasting perceptions of the faith and visions of the world where religions have irreconcilable roles – is perhaps the least known and most dramatic aspect of the spread of Integralist fundamentalism. Here we can understand why the pontiff is so committed to working against “walls” and any kind of “war of religion.”
Let's take this one at a time.

-"...the most dangerous prospect for this strange ecumenism is attributable to its xenophobic and Islamophobic vision that wants walls and purifying deportations."

"dangerous prospect" - I'm baffled by this and insulted by it. Catholics and evangelicals agreeing on a sovereign nation is suddenly a "dangerous prospect"? We have laws and we want them upheld, how on God's green earth is that a "dangerous prospect" for Catholics and evangelicals to agree on?

-"The word “ecumenism” transforms into a paradox, into an “ecumenism of hate.” - Suddenly the Catholics and evangelicals in the United States are "hateful" because we agree we need walls for protection against terrorists and we want stronger vetting policies so that we are allowing into our sovereign nation, people of good will, not heinous killers. That's rich coming from the Vatican sitting behind huge walls with armed guards stationed everywhere, while people line up outside the walls waiting for the Vatican's permission to let them in. Can we say hypocrisy?
This is what the Swiss Guard carries to protect Vatican City & Pope Francis...(my post on this HERE).

Let's move on to the Vatican's jab at Michael Voris and Church Militant.
Quote: "There is a shocking rhetoric used, for example, by the writers of Church Militant, a successful US-based digital platform that is openly in favor of a political ultraconservatism and uses Christian symbols to impose itself. This abuse is called “authentic Christianity.” And to show its own preferences, it has created a close analogy between Donald Trump and Emperor Constantine, and between Hilary Clinton and Diocletian. The American elections in this perspective were seen as a “spiritual war.”[3]This warlike and militant approach seems most attractive and evocative to a certain public, especially given that the victory of Constantine – it was presumed impossible for him to beat Maxentius and the Roman establishment – had to be attributed to a divine intervention: in hoc signo vinces.Church Militant asks if Trump’s victory can be attributed to the prayers of Americans. The response suggested is affirmative. The indirect missioning for President Trump is clear: he has to follow through on the consequences. This is a very direct message that then wants to condition the presidency by framing it as a divine election. In hoc signo vinces. Indeed."
The irony here is that Michael Voris and Church Militant have been staunchly solid in their defense of Pope Francis and their unwillingness to utter a word against him because he is a sitting pope. Other Catholic media from little blogs like my own, to much, much larger well known Catholic media like The Remnant and even EWTN's National Catholic Register and EWTN's own "The World Over" with Raymond Arroyo have spoke out in deep concern over many of the things Pope Francis has said and done, but not Church Militant. Voris has been very clear, they drew a line in the sand long ago to never publicly speak against a sitting pope, and so far they've kept to their word.

So here we have the Vatican taking a swipe at one of Pope Francis' staunchest defenders in the United States, it's insane really. I'll be interested in seeing how, or even if, Church Militant responds to this.

My response is Fr. Antonio Spadaro SJ and the Argentine Presbyterian Pastor Marcelo Figueroa don't know what the hell they are blathering about.

The whole thing began with people of faith dreading the pro-butchering of babies in the womb Hillary Clinton possibly becoming our next president. Cardinal Burke saw this and prompted Catholics to unite in a 54 day Novena to Our Lady to please help our nation to bring our citizens to holiness - this would not happen under Hillary Clinton A.K.A. "Killary".

This is the official endorsement of “Novena for Our Nation” by His Eminence, Cardinal Raymond Burke:
“There is no doubt that our beloved nation is in one of the worst crises which it has ever experienced, a profound moral crisis which generates division on all levels and results in an ever-greater more pervasive violence and killing. For Roman Catholics, who have always been known for their faith-filled patriotism, the first response to this crisis is fervent prayer and, in particular, prayer through the intercession of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, Mary Immaculate who is also the patroness of our nation.
One of the most powerful prayers which is ours in the Church is, in fact, the Holy Rosary. I think, for instance, of the Battle of Lepanto and the victory which was won on October 7, 1571, over the Saracens who were bent on conquering Christian Europe. Let us now turn to the powerful prayer of the Holy Rosary, asking Mary Immaculate to intercede with Our Lord to bring healing to our nation and to inspire in her citizens the holiness of life which alone can transform our nation.
I wholeheartedly endorse the Novena for Our Nation (Starting August 15) and the Rosary Rally on October 7th next, the 445th anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto. I urge as many as are able to participate in these great spiritual works for the sake of our entire nation. In a special way, as the spiritual advisor to the Holy League, I urge all members of the Holy League to give strong leadership in this great campaign of prayer for our nation.”
That prayer was answered! Trump ran on a Pro-life platform while Hillary Clinton ran on a pro-death platform. Trump won and many Catholics, including myself place much of our thanks to Our Lady and the Novena we prayed for our nation.

What Fr. Antonio Spadaro SJ and the Argentine Presbyterian Pastor Marcelo Figueroa have written about Catholics and evangelicals in the United States is disgusting and highly insulting. Shame on them!

Pope Francis Voter Guide 2016 elections

Just what we need, another progressive voter guide for liberals to push their anti-Catholic agenda's on stupid Catholics voting in this years Presidential election.

This "guide" is a little different from the previous progressive "Catholic" guide because it is using Pope Francis as its source for [get this] "…a new community with new rules is established…hierarchies are subverted, concentrated power is decentralized, and prodigal children are welcomed home."

Oh yes!  Out with the old (2,000+ years of Catholic teaching) and in with the new!  New things like the mortal sins of abortion and euthanasia are now equal with being poor!  Imagine that? Being poor is now a sin!

**(On a side note: this reminds me of another article I highly recommend all my readers read on Pope Francis' latest comment that Jesus was stained with sin- click HERE to read)

Here is a quote from the Pope Francis Voter Guide:
quote: "In this new place of mercy, the last are first, the poor are blessed, and enemies are loved. Black lives matter here. LGBTQ lives matter here; and so too do the lives of refugees, the imprisoned, the unborn, and anyone else who suffers dehumanization, exclusion, and injustice…. Today, human dignity and life is degraded by racism, violence, abortion, war, the death penalty, euthanasia, human trafficking, torture, environmental damage, and poverty."
To read more of this rubbish, go HERE.

Just wondering...does Pope Francis approve of his name being used on a progressive Catholic voter guide that places abortion on the same level as "environmental damage and poverty"?  Again, just when did being poor become a sin?

Will the Pope tell these progressives to "stop" or will he continue to allow them to use his name for such scandal?

Send this to Catholic Politicians everywhere!!

Apparently many of our American Bishops either don't know this document or refuse to share it with Catholics and in particular Catholic politicians.  Because [some of ] our Bishops are such failures at educating and correcting wayward/clueless/unrepentant Catholics about what the Church actually teaches, it must fall to ALL OTHER Catholics to share Church teaching and educate other Catholics.

**Please share this article from the Vatican... put it on Facebook, tweet it on Twitter, email it to family and friends and don't forget to share it with the Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden's in our government.  God bless you all for sharing our wonderful Catholic faith...

CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH
CONSIDERATIONS REGARDING PROPOSALS
TO GIVE LEGAL RECOGNITION
TO UNIONS
BETWEEN HOMOSEXUAL PERSONS

INTRODUCTION
1. In recent years, various questions relating to homosexuality have been addressed with some frequency by Pope John Paul II and by the relevant Dicasteries of the Holy See.(1) Homosexuality is a troubling moral and social phenomenon, even in those countries where it does not present significant legal issues. It gives rise to greater concern in those countries that have granted or intend to grant – legal recognition to homosexual unions, which may include the possibility of adopting children. The present Considerations do not contain new doctrinal elements; they seek rather to reiterate the essential points on this question and provide arguments drawn from reason which could be used by Bishops in preparing more specific interventions, appropriate to the different situations throughout the world, aimed at protecting and promoting the dignity of marriage, the foundation of the family, and the stability of society, of which this institution is a constitutive element. The present Considerations are also intended to give direction to Catholic politicians by indicating the approaches to proposed legislation in this area which would be consistent with Christian conscience.(2) Since this question relates to the natural moral law, the arguments that follow are addressed not only to those who believe in Christ, but to all persons committed to promoting and defending the common good of society.

I. THE NATURE OF MARRIAGE
AND ITS INALIENABLE CHARACTERISTICS
2. The Church's teaching on marriage and on the complementarity of the sexes reiterates a truth that is evident to right reason and recognized as such by all the major cultures of the world. Marriage is not just any relationship between human beings. It was established by the Creator with its own nature, essential properties and purpose.(3) No ideology can erase from the human spirit the certainty that marriage exists solely between a man and a woman, who by mutual personal gift, proper and exclusive to themselves, tend toward the communion of their persons. In this way, they mutually perfect each other, in order to cooperate with God in the procreation and upbringing of new human lives.
3. The natural truth about marriage was confirmed by the Revelation contained in the biblical accounts of creation, an expression also of the original human wisdom, in which the voice of nature itself is heard. There are three fundamental elements of the Creator's plan for marriage, as narrated in the Book of Genesis.
In the first place, man, the image of God, was created “male and female” (Gen 1:27). Men and women are equal as persons and complementary as male and female. Sexuality is something that pertains to the physical-biological realm and has also been raised to a new level – the personal level – where nature and spirit are united.
Marriage is instituted by the Creator as a form of life in which a communion of persons is realized involving the use of the sexual faculty. “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife and they become one flesh” (Gen 2:24).
Third, God has willed to give the union of man and woman a special participation in his work of creation. Thus, he blessed the man and the woman with the words “Be fruitful and multiply” (Gen 1:28). Therefore, in the Creator's plan, sexual complementarity and fruitfulness belong to the very nature of marriage.
Furthermore, the marital union of man and woman has been elevated by Christ to the dignity of a sacrament. The Church teaches that Christian marriage is an efficacious sign of the covenant between Christ and the Church (cf. Eph 5:32). This Christian meaning of marriage, far from diminishing the profoundly human value of the marital union between man and woman, confirms and strengthens it (cf. Mt 19:3-12; Mk 10:6-9).
4. There are absolutely no grounds for considering homosexual unions to be in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God's plan for marriage and family. Marriage is holy, while homosexual acts go against the natural moral law. Homosexual acts “close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved”.(4)
Sacred Scripture condemns homosexual acts “as a serious depravity... (cf. Rom 1:24-27; 1 Cor 6:10; 1 Tim 1:10). This judgment of Scripture does not of course permit us to conclude that all those who suffer from this anomaly are personally responsible for it, but it does attest to the fact that homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered”.(5) This same moral judgment is found in many Christian writers of the first centuries(6) and is unanimously accepted by Catholic Tradition.
Nonetheless, according to the teaching of the Church, men and women with homosexual tendencies “must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided”.(7) They are called, like other Christians, to live the virtue of chastity.(8) The homosexual inclination is however “objectively disordered”(9) and homosexual practices are “sins gravely contrary to chastity”.(10)

II. POSITIONS ON THE PROBLEM
OF HOMOSEXUAL UNIONS
5. Faced with the fact of homosexual unions, civil authorities adopt different positions. At times they simply tolerate the phenomenon; at other times they advocate legal recognition of such unions, under the pretext of avoiding, with regard to certain rights, discrimination against persons who live with someone of the same sex. In other cases, they favour giving homosexual unions legal equivalence to marriage properly so-called, along with the legal possibility of adopting children.
Where the government's policy is de facto tolerance and there is no explicit legal recognition of homosexual unions, it is necessary to distinguish carefully the various aspects of the problem. Moral conscience requires that, in every occasion, Christians give witness to the whole moral truth, which is contradicted both by approval of homosexual acts and unjust discrimination against homosexual persons. Therefore, discreet and prudent actions can be effective; these might involve: unmasking the way in which such tolerance might be exploited or used in the service of ideology; stating clearly the immoral nature of these unions; reminding the government of the need to contain the phenomenon within certain limits so as to safeguard public morality and, above all, to avoid exposing young people to erroneous ideas about sexuality and marriage that would deprive them of their necessary defences and contribute to the spread of the phenomenon. Those who would move from tolerance to the legitimization of specific rights for cohabiting homosexual persons need to be reminded that the approval or legalization of evil is something far different from the toleration of evil.
In those situations where homosexual unions have been legally recognized or have been given the legal status and rights belonging to marriage, clear and emphatic opposition is a duty. One must refrain from any kind of formal cooperation in the enactment or application of such gravely unjust laws and, as far as possible, from material cooperation on the level of their application. In this area, everyone can exercise the right to conscientious objection.

III. ARGUMENTS FROM REASON AGAINST LEGAL
RECOGNITION OF HOMOSEXUAL UNIONS
6. To understand why it is necessary to oppose legal recognition of homosexual unions, ethical considerations of different orders need to be taken into consideration.
From the order of right reason
The scope of the civil law is certainly more limited than that of the moral law,(11) but civil law cannot contradict right reason without losing its binding force on conscience.(12) Every humanly-created law is legitimate insofar as it is consistent with the natural moral law, recognized by right reason, and insofar as it respects the inalienable rights of every person.(13) Laws in favour of homosexual unions are contrary to right reason because they confer legal guarantees, analogous to those granted to marriage, to unions between persons of the same sex. Given the values at stake in this question, the State could not grant legal standing to such unions without failing in its duty to promote and defend marriage as an institution essential to the common good.
It might be asked how a law can be contrary to the common good if it does not impose any particular kind of behaviour, but simply gives legal recognition to a de facto reality which does not seem to cause injustice to anyone. In this area, one needs first to reflect on the difference between homosexual behaviour as a private phenomenon and the same behaviour as a relationship in society, foreseen and approved by the law, to the point where it becomes one of the institutions in the legal structure. This second phenomenon is not only more serious, but also assumes a more wide-reaching and profound influence, and would result in changes to the entire organization of society, contrary to the common good. Civil laws are structuring principles of man's life in society, for good or for ill. They “play a very important and sometimes decisive role in influencing patterns of thought and behaviour”.(14) Lifestyles and the underlying presuppositions these express not only externally shape the life of society, but also tend to modify the younger generation's perception and evaluation of forms of behaviour. Legal recognition of homosexual unions would obscure certain basic moral values and cause a devaluation of the institution of marriage.
From the biological and anthropological order
7. Homosexual unions are totally lacking in the biological and anthropological elements of marriage and family which would be the basis, on the level of reason, for granting them legal recognition. Such unions are not able to contribute in a proper way to the procreation and survival of the human race. The possibility of using recently discovered methods of artificial reproduction, beyond involv- ing a grave lack of respect for human dignity,(15) does nothing to alter this inadequacy.
Homosexual unions are also totally lacking in the conjugal dimension, which represents the human and ordered form of sexuality. Sexual relations are human when and insofar as they express and promote the mutual assistance of the sexes in marriage and are open to the transmission of new life.
As experience has shown, the absence of sexual complementarity in these unions creates obstacles in the normal development of children who would be placed in the care of such persons. They would be deprived of the experience of either fatherhood or motherhood. Allowing children to be adopted by persons living in such unions would actually mean doing violence to these children, in the sense that their condition of dependency would be used to place them in an environment that is not conducive to their full human development. This is gravely immoral and in open contradiction to the principle, recognized also in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, that the best interests of the child, as the weaker and more vulnerable party, are to be the paramount consideration in every case.
From the social order
8. Society owes its continued survival to the family, founded on marriage. The inevitable consequence of legal recognition of homosexual unions would be the redefinition of marriage, which would become, in its legal status, an institution devoid of essential reference to factors linked to heterosexuality; for example, procreation and raising children. If, from the legal standpoint, marriage between a man and a woman were to be considered just one possible form of marriage, the concept of marriage would undergo a radical transformation, with grave detriment to the common good. By putting homosexual unions on a legal plane analogous to that of marriage and the family, the State acts arbitrarily and in contradiction with its duties.
The principles of respect and non-discrimination cannot be invoked to support legal recognition of homosexual unions. Differentiating between persons or refusing social recognition or benefits is unacceptable only when it is contrary to justice.(16) The denial of the social and legal status of marriage to forms of cohabitation that are not and cannot be marital is not opposed to justice; on the contrary, justice requires it.
Nor can the principle of the proper autonomy of the individual be reasonably invoked. It is one thing to maintain that individual citizens may freely engage in those activities that interest them and that this falls within the common civil right to freedom; it is something quite different to hold that activities which do not represent a significant or positive contribution to the development of the human person in society can receive specific and categorical legal recognition by the State. Not even in a remote analogous sense do homosexual unions fulfil the purpose for which marriage and family deserve specific categorical recognition. On the contrary, there are good reasons for holding that such unions are harmful to the proper development of human society, especially if their impact on society were to increase.
From the legal order
9. Because married couples ensure the succession of generations and are therefore eminently within the public interest, civil law grants them institutional recognition. Homosexual unions, on the other hand, do not need specific attention from the legal standpoint since they do not exercise this function for the common good.
Nor is the argument valid according to which legal recognition of homosexual unions is necessary to avoid situations in which cohabiting homosexual persons, simply because they live together, might be deprived of real recognition of their rights as persons and citizens. In reality, they can always make use of the provisions of law – like all citizens from the standpoint of their private autonomy – to protect their rights in matters of common interest. It would be gravely unjust to sacrifice the common good and just laws on the family in order to protect personal goods that can and must be guaranteed in ways that do not harm the body of society.(17)

IV. POSITIONS OF CATHOLIC POLITICIANS
WITH REGARD TO LEGISLATION IN FAVOUR
OF HOMOSEXUAL UNIONS
10. If it is true that all Catholics are obliged to oppose the legal recognition of homosexual unions, Catholic politicians are obliged to do so in a particular way, in keeping with their responsibility as politicians. Faced with legislative proposals in favour of homosexual unions, Catholic politicians are to take account of the following ethical indications.
When legislation in favour of the recognition of homosexual unions is proposed for the first time in a legislative assembly, the Catholic law-maker has a moral duty to express his opposition clearly and publicly and to vote against it. To vote in favour of a law so harmful to the common good is gravely immoral.
When legislation in favour of the recognition of homosexual unions is already in force, the Catholic politician must oppose it in the ways that are possible for him and make his opposition known; it is his duty to witness to the truth. If it is not possible to repeal such a law completely, the Catholic politician, recalling the indications contained in the Encyclical Letter Evangelium vitae, “could licitly support proposals aimed at limiting the harm done by such a law and at lessening its negative consequences at the level of general opinion and public morality”, on condition that his “absolute personal opposition” to such laws was clear and well known and that the danger of scandal was avoided.(18) This does not mean that a more restrictive law in this area could be considered just or even acceptable; rather, it is a question of the legitimate and dutiful attempt to obtain at least the partial repeal of an unjust law when its total abrogation is not possible at the moment.

CONCLUSION
11. The Church teaches that respect for homosexual persons cannot lead in any way to approval of homosexual behaviour or to legal recognition of homosexual unions. The common good requires that laws recognize, promote and protect marriage as the basis of the family, the primary unit of society. Legal recognition of homosexual unions or placing them on the same level as marriage would mean not only the approval of deviant behaviour, with the consequence of making it a model in present-day society, but would also obscure basic values which belong to the common inheritance of humanity. The Church cannot fail to defend these values, for the good of men and women and for the good of society itself.
The Sovereign Pontiff John Paul II, in the Audience of March 28, 2003, approved the present Considerations, adopted in the Ordinary Session of this Congregation, and ordered their publication.
